Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko have officially announced the appointment of former Netherlands international Stanley Purl Menzo as the club’s new Director of Football, contrary to reports of him taking the head coach role.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, is part of Kotoko’s long-term plan to strengthen its technical leadership, modernize football operations, and bring the club back to the top of domestic and continental football.

The 62-year-old Dutchman comes with an impressive football background, having had a successful playing career with Dutch powerhouse AFC Ajax, where he made over 300 appearances and won nine major trophies.

Menzo was also a member of the Netherlands squad at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and played for his country at the European Championship level.

Besides Ajax, Menzo played for clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Lierse, and FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

His coaching and management career has spanned three continents, with roles at FC Volendam, SC Cambuur, and Lierse in Europe, Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, Beijing Guoan in China, and the national teams of Aruba and Suriname. He also served as goalkeeping coach for the Netherlands national team under legendary Dutch striker and coach Marco van Basten.

In his new role, Menzo will oversee the club’s football strategy, including technical planning, player recruitment and retention, youth development, and aligning the academy and senior team structures into a unified football identity.

The club further announced that Menzo will handle all technical matters until a permanent head coach is appointed for the senior team.

Executive Chairman James Osei Brown welcomed the appointment, describing Menzo as a leader who combines elite playing experience, proven leadership, and a global football perspective capable of helping Kotoko build a sustainable winning structure.

This appointment marks an important step for the Porcupine Warriors as they aim to rebuild and compete for major titles in the upcoming seasons.
