Gambia national team coach Tom Saintfient has said that when it comes to tournaments, it is not emphatic that the ‘big names’ that represent their countries will certainly win the tournament.
Speaking in an interview with Juliet Bawuah ahead of their quarter-final game against Cameroon the host, the Belgian trainer makes it clear that his team Gambia is very optimistic about winning and sailing through to the semi’s
He believes that yes the host country is coming in with a crop of players ploughing their trade for top-flight European leagues but it doesn’t mean that with the names they have they will automatically win every game
He sighted example with previous and the ongoing tournament that countries that had top quality players have been knocked out by teams that are perceived to be underdogs
“We give respect to Cameroon the host country. They are good no doubt and this is our big game in the tournament. We have to be tactically disciplined to win this. We respect them but we don’t fear them” the gaffer added.
The AFCON is full of surprises and it won’t be something different if the headlines after the 90 minutes narrate history.
Gambia is in the tournament for the first time and they look forward to creating unforgettable memories.
