Ghanaian athletes Rose Yeboah Amoanimaa and Edwin Gadayi were crowned Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively, at the 49th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards held on Friday, January 24, 2025. Their outstanding performances in 2024 brought great pride to the nation and set a benchmark for future sports stars.

Rose Yeboah’s remarkable year was capped by a gold medal win at the 13th African Games in the high jump. Her performance not only solidified her as Ghana’s leading athlete but also earned her a spot at the prestigious 2024 Paris Olympics, making her a national icon.

Edwin Gadayi, meanwhile, impressed in the 100m final at the Confederation of African Athletics Region II Championship. Despite falling short of qualifying for the Paris Olympics, his perseverance and skill in sprinting have made him a source of inspiration for young athletes across the country.

The night also celebrated other notable figures in sports, including Bright Kankam Boadu of Pure FM, who was named SWAG Journalist of the Year. During his acceptance speech, he highlighted the plight of Ghana’s amputee football team, who continue to face challenges such as unpaid bonuses and inadequate support, calling for greater attention to less-publicized sports disciplines.
