Sporting infrastructure in Ghana has not been at the best stage, however managing such facilities after being prepared has been a big tag for those in charge. Thus, there seems to be progress to that effect.

Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif has confirmed that the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will soon undergo significant renovation and maintenance works to ensure its suitability for sporting activities.

The stadium serves as the home ground for Tamale-based clubs, Real Tamale United and Tamale United as they participate in the 2022/2023 Betpawa Premier League.

Speaking about the ongoing efforts to improve sports infrastructure in the country, Ussif said the government has already commenced a series of renovation works on major sports stadia across the nation, including the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, and the Essipon Sports Stadium in the Western Region, adding “The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will also receive its share of renovation.”

He further explained that the first phase of renovation and maintenance had been completed for these sports facilities, with plans in place for a second phase. To assess the challenges facing the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium and ensure proper care and maintenance, Ussif recently conducted a tour of the facility.

The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, which was last renovated a decade ago, is currently in a deplorable state. The VVIP section’s roof, toilet facilities, and popular stands are all in need of repair, as they hope to finish up on time as CAF may consider approving the stadia for international matches.
