33-year-old Rwandan Salima Mukansanga will become the first woman to officiate at an African Cup of Nations.
Among the list of referees who will be officiating in this year’s tournament is Salima Mukansanga.
Her presence in the list comes as a surprise because this is the first time the competition is given chance for a female referee.
Salima has been an official for the Women’s football event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
She was also an official for the just-ended CAF Women’s Champions League.
Mukansanga was an official for the 2019 Women’s World Cup which was held in France.
According to local websites in Rwanda, Makansanga wanted to become a professional basketball player as a teenager but decided to become a referee 15 years ago.
Since 2018 she has taken charge of numerous matches in Rwanda and has now landed her biggest opportunity yet.
With her experience in refereeing in the women’s game, football fans are in hasty expectation in the men’s.
