If names were laurels, perhaps we could say they would have been the most decorated club in Ghana. Ironically, their plethora of names is in contrast to the needed laurels every football club desires other than the attention of an endless list of names.

Named as the “wonder club of Ghana”, Accra Great Olympics resides in the heart of Ghana’s capital city Accra with its umbilical cord stapled to the real indigenes of the Accra folks Ga Mashie.

Formed three years before Ghana’s independence, Great Olympics can be labelled as one of Ghana’s oldest clubs. They have annexed the Ghana premier league both in 1970 and 1974.

In terms of the Ghana FA cup, Oly Dade as affectionately called has won it thrice in 1975, 1983, 1995.

They have also represented Ghana twice in the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1971 reaching the semi-finals. In 1975 they exited at the first round. Four times CAF Cup Winners’ Cup appearances

There were times names like Oly Dade, Oly Gbogbo, Oly mashie Emashie kpeen represented essences.

Interestingly, however, in the last 26 years, Olympics have gained more names for themselves than laurels or trophies they have in their trophy cabinet.

The additional names they have gained recently are either for comic reliefs, subject them to excessive mockery or also to spite them. From ‘Pioto’ to ‘Rosalinda’ down to ‘Acapulco’. It has gotten to the point where everything jovial is aligned with the Olympics. They have juggled more with relegation, embroiled in many controversies and turmoils.

The year 2019 marked the return of the great club Accra Great Olympics to topflight football under rather weirdly circumstances.

Although the suggestion espoused by the normalization committee members who were marking an end to their work following the debacle that brought the entire GFA to its knees was met with mixed feelings, the NC indicated it was to bring all encumbrances to sleep.

Thus, Oly and King Faisal who were battling the previous administration at the law court saw their return to expand the league to an 18 club league.

Fast track to this current season, the wonder club has improved exponentially vying to become domestic champions after 26yrs. It’s as a result of these incredible performances being churned out by Olympics that have compelled some people to the quiz if Olympics are about to pull a “dagger” beneath a disaster?

The coronavirus has ravaged the entire human circles but it would appear, Olympics have stumbled into a silver lining element besides the catastrophe.

The team that looked almost like it was going to go back to where it was struggling in division one in the abridged league when the pandemic struck, has metamorphosed into a magnificent side taking the current league by ransom.

It’s a team that abounds with quality, talents, confidence and depths. Currently, the Olympics occupy the second position with 40 points one point adrift Kotoko.

Hypothetically, this may be something that baffles the minds of the Olympics team however with where they find themselves they can only dream and hope the dream becomes a reality.

This has all been down to one man aside from the other elements that have also played into the redefining story of the Olympics. The transformational hand of the technical head Annor Walked has been atop.

Regardless of where the Olympics will finish at the end of the season, at the heart of the narrative that will characterize Olympics scripts is how he worked out that magic that has seen Great Olympics leapt to this level.

The other element is the Dunkirk spirit to which he brings his boys. Collective efforts will not go missing in any of the paragraphs after which when they look back it will always be like we did it together and not like perhaps one person did it.

Having said that, it will not all be said without the seismic effect of Gladson Awako.

Without a doubt has he been remarkable in the centre of issues for his side this season.

The abroad returnee hasn’t only impressed but has also charted a huge path that would have to be emulated by players who travel abroad.

Well, as their supporters glow with confidence saying this could be the year or time to clone the likes of Kotoko, Hearts and the others to emerge champions maybe I just have to shout to say “Oly we shall win the league this season”.

We watch on calmly and patiently.
