The introduction of “Ghana beyond aid” by President Akufo Addo empowers the Ghanaians to develop the nation without any foreign influence. The appointment of coaches for national teams, specifically the Black Stars isn’t an exemption of this “Ghana beyond aid” slogan under this government.
Two local coaches have been appointed consecutively namely Kwasi Appiah and CK Akunnor to steer the affairs as head coaches of Black Stars under President Akufo Addo government due to the “Ghana beyond aid” slogan.
Poor 2019 AFCON performance under Kwesi Appiah and shocking 2022 FIFA world cup qualifiers outing under CK Akunnor portrays a negative thought about the “competence” of current local coaches.
Deputy Youth and sports minister, Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie has given 4 key reasons why people have developed a negative perception about local coaches capacity, managing the Senior National Team, Black Stars.
Speaking on Angel tv’s morning show, he said “
- EASY TO BE INFLUENCED: “People have this notion that current local coaches are influenced in decision making like player call ups and selection of players for matches”
- LOW STATUS: According to the Deputy sports minister, foreign players called for national duty by these local coaches have this perception that they have made it in life than these local coaches therefore they owe them no respect in camp.
- MANAGEMENT OF PLAYER’S EGO: Players have different characters whether positive or negative and in such instance, you need a coach who can stand on his authority to manage such ego’s.
Our players normally put up a good attitude in camp in the presence of white coaches than our local coaches. - COMMAND IN DRESSING ROOM: According to the Former Ahafo regional minister, some local coaches advice given to these players before matches are normally ignored by the foreign-based players because they think they have travelled and they are tactically-minded than our local coaches, therefore, local coaches lose matches in the dressing room before playing the match on the pitch.
He further indicated that current local coaches should build on their capacity tactically and stand on their authority when handed the nod to steer the affairs of Black Stars as head coaches.
Coach Milovan Rajevac will replace ousted CK Akunnor as head coach of the Senior national team for the remainder of Qatar 2022 FIFA world cup qualifiers and AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
