After rain of goals in the first 4 matches on Boxing day, the next two matches added 6 more goals to end the festive season.
Steven Gerrad’s Aston Villa welcomed home European Champions Chelsea. Gerrad was absent from the touch line due to COVID. Assistant manager took over for the game. First 20 minutes was end to end football, attack after attack with both teams showing off their offensive prowess. Matt Target’s cross was deflected off the head of Reece James to hand the first blood drawn to the hosts. The equalizer did not take long. Just 6 minutes after going in front, the visitors were awarded a penalty after a foul on Hodson Odoi by Matty Cash.
Jorginho slotted the ball home in typical Jorginho style. Lukaku proved the final piece of the jigsaw in the second half. A goal to put them in the lead after finding enough space to head Odoi’s cross beyond Martinez. Another penalty again taken by Jorginho put daylight between the two teams.
A win for Chelsea keeps them firmly rooted in 3rd level on points with 2nd place Liverpool although they have a game in hand. Villa are 11th on 22 points.
Brighton played their first game since the defeat to Wolves 11 days ago, victims of Covid-19 outbreaks. They hosted the bees at the Amex stadium. Two goals in the 34th and 42nd minute of the first half proved enough to seal the win. An amazing off the line head clearance and a knee save from Sanchez kept the clean sheet intact for the Seagulls. The win puts Brighton in 9th and three points ahead of tonight’s opponents.
Two matches have been postponed ahead of time for gameweek 20. Arsenal vrs Wolves and Leeds vrs Aston Villa would not come off on Tuesday December 28th 2021.
