The journey to the 2026 FIFA World for African Continent was on as the draw for the qualifiers for the 2026 world cup was done at the 46th African Confederation Congress in Cote D’Ivoire yesterday.
Ghana was paired in Group I alongside Mali, Comoros, Madagascar, Chad, and Central Africa Republic, however, most Ghanaians are optimistic that the Black Stars of Ghana will book its place in the Mundial.
Legend and Former player of the Black John Painstil believe Ghana’s group is a very tricky one however, he urges the team to be very careful with the teams in the group.
“It’s not a difficult group but a tricky one. We have Mali, Madagascar, CAR, and Comoros, which have a history with us. Comoros believe their history against us at the Nations Cup is still there.”- he said.
Paintsil emphasized the prior confrontations between Ghana and Comoros, implying that Comoros is still motivated by their victory over the Black Stars in the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
He further explained the tricky nature of the group, stating.
“Countries paired against Ghana in the group have an upper hand because they have nothing to lose playing us. If we beat them, it’s no use, but if they beat us, it’s big news and that tells you it’s a tricky group. Mali is the most stubborn football country in Africa because they can upset you anytime.”
Ghana, a four-time African champion, will be playing in their fifth World Cup after taking part in 2006, 2010, 2014, and the most recent edition in Qatar last year.
Contrarily, Chad, Mali, Madagascar, the Central African Republic, and Comoros have never made it to the World Cup qualifying round.
The Black Stars must overcome the challenges put up by their opponents and finish first in their group to secure qualification for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
