The Handball Association of Ghana (HAG) in collaboration with the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) and the Ghana Handball Referees Association is organizing a National Handball Referees and Match Delegate Course at 2 Capital Cities, Cape Coast and Tamale.

Beginning from the Central regional capital from 3rd (arrival) to 7th (departure) of November 2020 will see the potential, zonal, regional, national and CAHB Referees being trained for a fee of GH₵250.00 which covers feeding, Lacoste, certificate and other souvenirs, while Accommodation arrangements will be made at a fee for participants.

The Course, first of its kind, will have 1 International Facilitator, Benjamin De Souza, a Gabonese Technical Delegate from CAHB, with the rest; Technical Director, George Bankole, Charles W. Mensah & Henry Nortey, who will together treat areas like Fundamentals of the Game, Ball handling, Steps, Decision making, Punishment, Pivot Zone, offensive Fault, and Provocation. Last 30 seconds, Administrative Yellow card, Match observations and Roles of Match Delegates are others to be lectured on.

Speaking to Herosportgh.com ahead of the 3-day course, Secretary to the Ghana Handball Referees Association, Alfred Agrah, explains why the need for this course.

“We want to rebrand the Association because we have more referees who aren’t licensed. CAHB has recognized the Ghana Handball Referees Association and wants us to structure ourselves according to their Regulations. So as referees, you must write exams, take the certificate and be licensed. This course is what will begin that process. Meanwhile, those in it already will do Accelerated Promotion. We have also realized the limited number of Match Delegates, who must also know the Rules. CAHB as well wants our list and ranking by the end of the year, for them to start training the young referees. Finally, we want to start the National League.”

Agrah who doubles as the Secretary of the Volta Regional Handball Association, further stated, that time will be given to those who will fail the Exams and shuttle run to prove themselves.

“Participants will write exams and do fitness, which is called Shuttle run. So, if you pass, you’ll be given the Certificate and enrolled but if you fail, you’ll be given another time to do it. You might do it at your region or do it there again. Because of that, we’re training Chief Referees at every region, so they see to the young referees and send their reports to national.”

So far, over 200 people have registered for this course at Cape Coast while the Tamale date is from Tuesday, 10th to Saturday, 14th of November 2020.
