Football is a contact sport and has often been characterized by sheer physicality and several risk factors.

While recent data suggest decreasing frequency of ligamentous injuries, the causative or otherwise human elements are still present.

A typical scenario occurred in the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League Week 2 encounter between Hearts of Oak and Nsoatreman FC at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In the closing embers of the encounter, Hearts of Oak forward Albert Eonde was sent through on goal via a lob only for Nsoatreman FC goalkeeper Daniel Afadzwu to fly in recklessly to clamp down the forward.

The goalkeeper’s foot missed the Eonde’s head only by a whisker; a challenge which should have earned him a red card and Nsoatreman FC’s second on the afternoon.

Interestingly, the referee Gabriel Opoku only issued a yellow, a decision he might reconsider should a Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) Tech be available.

Daniel may have been lucky to get only a yellow for the reckless tackle, but Albert Eonde is the luckiest as the tackle could have been devastating considering the cost and impact of similar incidences in similar incidences in the continent and their regions.

That said, it is crucial for the organizers, the Ghana Football Association, to take a retrospective look at the incident and act accordingly.
