Arsenal beats Man City 4-1 in penalty shootout to win Community Shield

The only game scheduled to be played on Saturday December 18th 2021 which came on after numerous other matches were postponed as a result of an outbreak of covid-19 in camps was a tricky trip to Elland Road to face Leeds.

Following a 7-0 defeat to Manchester City in their previous match Leeds were hoping to bounce back from the humiliating defeat. A win for them opens the gap between them and the relegation scrap and a win for Arsenal cements fourth…. for now.

The Gunners were unchanged from the side that beat West Ham a few days ago and ex Captain Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was still out of the squad. Marcelo Bielsa was still without plenty of first team players.

It was all Arsenal in the first 45 minutes. Long and successful pressure and dominance was rewarded with a Gabriel Martinelli brace, his 3rd goal in 4 appearances. Bukayo Saka added the third to give Arsenal a huge lead.

Leeds banished their identity as an all attacking team and restored a level of defensive normality in their team in the 2nd half. This change made it harder for the Gunners to exert their dominance. A needless tackle in the penalty box by Benjamin White in the 75th minute gave Leeds a consolation through an emphatic strike by Raphina. The confidence that came with the consolation goal was quickly shut down after Emile Smith Rowe came off the bench for the second successive game to add to the Gunners’ tally.

A 4-1 victory puts Arsenal 4 points clear of direct contenders West Ham.

With Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspurs and Leicester all with games in hand, Arsenal are just doing their bits.
