It was two days of Enhancing the young Cricket Talents in Ho, at the OLA SHS Park, which ended on Saturday, November 21, 2020, as the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) targets unearthing efficient players for the national U-19 Team in a long-term plan, from age 14.

Being the 2nd stop after Kuntum and Saltpond earlier this year, 30 players selected from the various schools in Ho went through bowling, wicket keeping, high catch, low catch, ball retrieving, and long barrier in Fielding skills.

There was bat grip, back lift, taking a stance, bat swing, hook and pull shots in Batting Skills.

Francis Bakiweyem, National U-19 Coach explains the whole idea behind the Tour in getting formidable players for the Team in the Future.

“GCA has been moving to regions for Mass participation and we want to identify potential players and enhance their talents. This is phase 1 and we will come back for Pick performance and then the High performance. We are doing these to groom them and give all the regions an equal opportunity to play for the national U-19 Team. Over the years it has been only Accra and for the past 5 years, other players have come from Saltpond and Obuasi. And their success at the national team has boosted and motivated others in their areas.” He told Herosportgh.com

After the 2-day training, which also involved square cuts, on-drive, straight-drive, off-drive, and finally a Mini-Game situation to assess the level of acquisition of the skills taught, Francis, admitted spotting few promising players, who must be monitored.

“We have identified a lot of potential players that in the near future if they make time for themselves, they will excel. These players must have more time for training and be consistent, If not, we will keep going back. We have left some hardball equipment for regional coaches and tasked them to keep training the players. The coaches must have time for the players and the players must also have time for themselves. And with that, the future will be a promising one.”

Regional Coaches, Kingsley Agbezugeh, Victor Tetteh, Gilbert Aguadze, and Angela have played tremendous roles in shaping these players over the years after the U-13 High performance in May 2016 which saw the formation of an Under-13 Regional team.

Two products of that team, who have been consistent, 15-year Jaen Pierre Ebam and 17-year old Wisdom Deladem Tutor were part of the 2-day program. The younger brother of Wisdom, 14 years old, Eugene Xorlali Tutor whose skill transformed over the years and also participated in last year’s U-15 league at the Stadium is another gem to watch out for.

According to Victor Tetteh, Secretary of the Volta Region Cricket Association, they are revitalizing and reenergizing themselves again for a massive development in the region as it was in 2016.
