Before the 33rd edition of the Africa cup of nations in Cameroon, the continents football body (CAF) confirms the elite tournament in Cameroon will be associated with the Video Assistant Referee in all 52 matches.
Former CAF Vice President, Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed his delight and commendation to the African football body for such bold initiative.
In an interview with Onua tv morning show dubbed “Onua Maakye,” he said “I commend FIFA and CAF for introducing VAR at AFCON 2021. The advent of the video assistant referee regardless of its initial controversies around it has helped the game of football”
“Take for instance Dominic Adiyiah’s header and Suarez’s handball at the world cup, Ghana would have easily advanced to the semi-finals but it wasn’t so” he added.
The Video Assistant Referee was first used in Africa at AFCON 2019 in Egypt, where it was partially used from the Quarter-finals to the final stage.
It was supposed to be used in the CAF champions league finals between Esperance de Tunis and Wydad club athletic in 2019 but didn’t function due to technical problems.
The commencement of the 2021 Africa cup of nations is Sunday, January 9 2022 to Sunday, February 6 2022 in Cameroon.
