Ghana’s super clash couldn’t have been better as the two illustrious clubs in Ghana football Hearts and Kotoko spectacularly reignited their rivalry to treat us with a great game.
It was the 196th meeting of the Phobians and the porcupine warriors with the two tied on points, and as fate may have had it the match had the possibility of deciding the destination of the league trophy and the ultimate bragging rights.
Usual of Hearts and Kotoko games the build-up to the encounter was huge, with the media giving it the hype any super clash could afford. The two teams were at their usual bragging elements claiming to carry the day.
Hearts are chasing a first league trophy since 2009, with Kotoko bent on stifling the party to make a 24th league trophy triumph the stakes were always going to be intense.
When the day finally came the two teams added to the Ghanaian football heritage a sumptuous game to mark the much-anticipated match. Fortunately for Hearts, their tactics worked for them as they dominated a lions share of proceedings culminating in the only goal which separated them and their fiercest rivals.
Conversely, Kotoko proved tough but only to give up the ghost in the 65th minute leading to their first loss for many years now at the Accra sports stadium against nemesis Hearts of Oak.
After the game, it was gratifying to say that the supporters of both clubs went home satisfied without grievances, complaints or whatsoever. Interestingly, however, as they walked back home with separate feelings, they were seen consoling and commending themselves after all it was a game of football and the best team had it. It is also worthy to bring to the fore the performance of the referee on the day.
Referee Daniel Laryea must enormously be commended that at the point of pessimism and rejection for Ghanaian referees questioning their temperaments to officiate the match on the back of what has been described by many as a lacklustre performance, he stood tall to at least give the impression all is not lost.
Few days after the match a grapevine emerged the FA officials were considering outsourcing officiating of the super clash.
But with the satisfaction from the supporters of the football fraternity, it will only be good to believe in our referees and give them the needed support to deliver the goods we expect of them. The referees must also work hard to clear any doubts in the minds of the populace towards them.
We cannot also be oblivious to the measures put forth by the Ghana football association and other authorities to ensure serenity on the match day. From advanced ticket sales to the joint military and police force all to ensure good conduct from all and sundry. The banners that drummed the message of saying no to hooliganism was on point and I must intimate my excitement to the FA for heeding to that initiative as it has been severally talked about on the GAME show.
Another thing that couldn’t have escaped our lenses had to do with enormous interests and the enthusiasm the super clash generated among celebrities, talk show hosts and politicians. For once some of these personalities could not hide their support for Hearts or Kotoko and the twist of hype it gave to the game was simply enthralling.
On a whole, the game lived to its billing with supporters conducting themselves well. Ayekoo to the media for giving us their top games. Without a doubt, this will add up to the best super clashes portfolio.
